Joseph Anderson

Joseph Anderson
Joseph Anderson was appointed to the Housing Authority board in August 2016. He relocated to New Bern from Pomona New York in 2008. Mr. Anderson retired from Verizon Communications as vice president of quality management and supplier diversity after a successful 30 year career. Mr. Anderson is a highly successful senior level executive with career spanning from Supplier Diversity to a member us the US Pan Asian Chamber of Commerce. Served as a mentor, business advisor with the Minority Business Enterprise Council, Founding member and past president of the NYNEX Minority Management Association, National Minority Development Council, Women’s Business Enterprise Nations Council and the US Hispanic Partners Chamber of Commerce. His education includes Executive Development: Columbia University’s Transition to General Management Program; Columbia University Graduate School of Business Baruch College Professional Development Program; Cambridge College EEO Studies, NY State School of Industry and Labor Relations Cornell University Analytical Thinking in Management for NY Telephone; Certified Systems Professional EDP Auditor, Association for Systems Managers; Boston Fellows Program. His current affiliations include serving in the New Bern Historical Society and Twin Rivers Lions Club. He also serves as an historic interpreter at Tryon Palace. In his spare time he enjoys reading, sailing and cycling.

Carol Becton


Carol Becton
Carol B. Becton was appointed to the Housing Authority of the City of New Bern's Board of Commissioners in 2012. Carol was married to the late Capt. James E. Becton of the New Bern Police Department for 34 years and has three children Jvanete, Shade, and Devin and two grandchildren. She is a native New Bernian. Carol attended North Carolina Central University, East Carolina University, and Undenominational Bible Institute. She worked in the Craven County school system for 34 years retiring as principal of Trent Park Elementary in 2008. As a citizen devoted to serving her community, Carol has served on various boards and in many organizations. As an active member of Theta Beta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority and the New Bern Climbers Club, Carol serves as chaplain in both organizations. Among her civic activities are: Craven Regional Library Board of Trustees, The New Bern Historical Society, Craven County Arts Council, Uptown Business Association, and the 300th Anniversary Committee.


 

    

Bill Frederic

Bill Frederick
Bill Frederick is a graduate of Youngstown University, Cum Laude and Mr. Frederick holds a MA in Industrial Management from the University of Akron; etc. He was recruited by New York Central Railroad early in his career and has worked at the Arizona & California Railroad, California Northern Railroad and the Puget Sound and Pacific Railroad in Elma Washington; he served in Vietnam; founder and chair of Barberton Community Development Corporation and Parker Area Development Corporation, past President of Barberton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Parker, Arizona Area Chamber of Commerce; Mr. Frederick retired to New Bern in 2002 and has since served as Chairman of SCORE, Chairman New Bern Fireman’s Museum, Mumfest Boat Show Co-Chair and New Bern Housing Authority Treasurer; and he currently serves as Venture Capital Treasurer, etc.

Lisa Hardy

Lisa Hardy
Molichia (Lisa) Hardy is a native of New York City. She moved to North Carolina more than 16 years ago. She was elected to serve on the Housing Authority of the City of New Bern's Board of Commissioners in 2010. She also serves as the Resident Council President for the New Bern Towers. Ms. Hardy has one primary goal while serving as Resident Commissioner and Council President: helping to empower others. In her leisure time, she enjoys reading, singing in the choir, and making crafts.

              

Thomas Hardin

Thomas Hardin
Thomas C. Hardin received his undergraduate degree from NC Central University and his graduate degree from Howard University. He completed four years of military service in the US Army (ASA) and was employed with the Office of Personnel and Labor Relations with Prince George's County Government in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Mr. Hardin retired after thirty years of creditable service and relocated to New Bern. He has served on various boards such as the New Bern Boys and Girls Club, New Bern Housing Authority, City of New Bern Board of Adjustment, Police Civil Service Board, etc. He is an active member of St. Peter's AME Zion Church and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity where he held the position of Basileus and Finance Officer. In his spare time, he hits a round of golf.

Barbra Lee
A native New Bernian, Mrs. Barbara Lee has always exhibited a passion for enhancing her community. Elected as the first African American woman on the New Bern Board of Alderman; Mrs. Lee was inspired early in life by Mr. “Buckshot” Nixon. Because of this, she was an asset to the Civil Rights Movement of the mid 1960’s; and, went on to become the first African American woman in the NC State Legislature District House 12. She continues this legacy today by still being an advocate for anyone in need.

For the past 5 decades Mrs. Lee has been actively involved in her community through programs designed to improve the lives of those around her. Furthermore, her affection for children has compelled her to organize programs specifically for the youth; as she believes, “it’s all about the children.”

Mrs. Lee serves as the Executive Director of the 21st CCLC After-School for Youth program. This program operates for the sole purpose of “saving the seed.” When she’s not diligently working supporting our community through various additional responsibilities; she devotes her time to her loving husband Samuel Lee of 47 years.

          

           

Pete Monte

Pete Monte, Chairman
Pete Monte moved to New Bern with his family at a young age and has called New Bern home ever since. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a Bachelor’s of Science in engineering. Mr. Monte served his country honorable in the United States Army. In 1980, Pete Monte in partnership with his late father, Robert Monte, founded Monte Printers. The business is still in successful operation through the hard work and efforts of Pete and Firth Monte.
His favorite pastimes are cooking, reading and traveling. He and Firth have three children and one grandchild. Along with his family, Pete Monte is a member of Garber Methodist Church. He is also a Rotarian. Mr. Monte was appointed to the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners in 2014 and was elected Board Chair in 2015.

Willie Newkirk

Willie Newkirk
Mr. Newkirk has lived in New Bern since 1958. He is originally from Rose Hill, Duplin County. He is the owner/operator of Newkirk Transportation Service. He has been an entrepreneur in this community for over forty years. He has serve the New Bern community in various ways to include, but not limited to, New Bern Area Chamber of Commerce, Partners in Education, City of New Bern Board of Adjustment, African-American Men Alliance, New Bern Preservation Train Depot Committee and he is advocate for the military, volunteering at many military events.

      

      

Rob Overman
Rob Overman - Vice Chairman

Rob Overman was appointed to the Housing Authority board in December of 2014. He moved to New Bern in 1980 soon after graduating from the University of South Carolina with degrees in Finance and Mechanical Engineering. He joined the Industrial Engineering department at Hatteras Yachts. After five years and numerous promotions he left to join Wheat First Securities. In 2002 after seventeen years and many name changes, he left to start his own firm of Overman Capital Management located in New Bern. Rob has been involved in numerous community projects and organizations including both of the Rotary Clubs of New Bern, the Neuse River Foundation, Christ Episcopal Church, and the Eagle Review Board for the East Carolina Council of Boy Scouts. He lives downtown with his wife of 31 years, Laura and they have 2 adult daughters.

Steve Strickland

Steve Strickland
Steve Strickland was appointed to the Housing Authority Board in October of 2016.  His family moved to New Bern in 1988.  He graduated from New Bern High School (1997) and East Carolina University (2001 – Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with concentrations in Accounting and Finance, 2003 – Master of Science in Accounting with a concentration in Taxation).  After beginning his professional career in Raleigh, NC with McGladrey & Pullen, LLP in 2003, Mr. Strickland returned to New Bern with the firm in 2005.  In 2012 he accepted a position with East Carolina University to serve as the Tax Accountant for the University and its related foundations.   Mr. Strickland is a member of Temple Baptist Church and has served the City of New Bern as a member of the Board of Adjustment since his appointment in October of 2015.
